Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are designed to to closely wrap around
the jaw bone, but just under the gum. There is actually no
placement of implant components into the bone, unlike the
procedures required of the root-form and plate-form implants.

Subperiosteal implants is recommended for cases where there
may be extreme bone deformities or cases where there may not
be enough bone mass for the root-form or plate-form implants.

Before the prominence of CT scans in the medical and dental
field, surgeons implemented the "dual surgery" method when
using the subperiosteal implants as a treatment method. The
surgeon or dentist would expose the jaw bone and would then
take impressions of the patient. The impression is sent to the
dental laboratory where the entire implant is fabricated. At least
one month later, the actual placement of the subperiosteal
implants would be done.

With modern advances in technology, the dentist or surgeon
may prescribe a CT scan today instead of the dual surgery
method. Not only will the scan allow for more accuracy, but the
entire procedure would be reduced to only one surgery.
